Lucca Film Festival 2023 Call for nominations

The calls for the 2023 Lucca Film Festival feature films, short films, the Lucca Effetto cinema, and the new short film competition, the Lucca Film Festival for Future, have opened.

Calling all filmmakers and cinema fans! You can now apply for the highly anticipated international feature and short film competition of the 2023 Lucca Film Festival. For this prestigious event from September 23 to October 1it has become a cornerstone of Italian cultural life and has attracted notable figures in the international film industry such as Oliver Stone, David Lynch, Alfonso Cuarón and Jeremy Irons, among others.

Organized with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, the festival aims to present contemporary independent films by a panel of experts. In a nod to the digital age, the selected short films will not only be screened in Lucca cinemas, but will also be made available online throughout the festival through our highly valued collaboration with Festival Scope.

Feature film competition: Presentation of the best of cinema

The feature film competition promises to be the highlight of the festival, where 12 outstanding films compete for prestigious awards. The competition includes categories such as Best Feature Film, awarded by a prestigious jury in the film industry, Best Feature Film – Student Jury, judged by university students, Best Feature Film – Popular Jury, judged by the public, and the Marcello Petrozziello Award, the awarded by a press jury. To be eligible, films must have a running time of at least 60 minutes and be made in 2022 or later. They must also be Italian premieres, ensuring that they have not previously been screened or distributed in Italy or participated in other Italian film festivals. The deadline for submission via the Filmfreeway and Festhome portals is July 14, 2023.. Applicants must submit an online screening of their work, accompanied by a list of dialogues in English if the dialogues or subtitles are not in Italian. Short Film Competition: A Celebration of Creativity

The Short Film Competition, now in its 19th year, is an integral part of the history of the Lucca Film Festival. This year, the winning entry will be awarded with a cash prize of 500 euros. In a groundbreaking collaboration with the Sofidel group, the Lucca Film Festival presents a new short film competition called Lucca Film Festival for Future. Sofidel, the second largest producer of hygiene and household paper in Europe and the seventh in the world, has made sustainability a cornerstone of its growth strategy. This competition highlights the importance of environmental protection and the transition to a low-carbon economy. It also includes the “Film For Our Future” festival network and the EURASF network, which brings together science communicators, filmmakers and festival organizers across Europe.

Lucca Film Festival for Future is looking for innovative and engaging short films that address environmental themes through a variety of storytelling modes, including narrative, documentary and interactive formats. A jury consisting of representatives of 10 festivals of the “Film For Our Future” network will award a grand prize of 1,000 euros. The festival aims to foster a dialogue between cinematic narrative and environmentalism, encouraging public engagement and collective efforts to care for our planet. The selected films will be screened at the 2023 Lucca Film Festival, with dedicated morning screenings for schools and afternoon screenings for the general public. Lucca Effetto cinema: Transformation of the historic center

Another exciting event related to the Lucca Film Festival is the Lucca Effetto cinema. The event, exclusively co-produced by the city of Lucca and the Chamber of Commerce of Northwest Tuscany, enlivens the historic center with micro-performances presented by amateur theater associations and dance companies from all over Italy. Applications are now open until August 1, 2023for performers, public institutions, shops and hotels in the historic center of Lucca. Lucca Effetto cinema, scheduled for September 30, 2023, there will be 5-10 minute performances, with breaks of at least 30 minutes between each act. The prizes, including the audience prize and the prize of the professional jury, are given to the partners of the event. In addition, the festival will present the Revelation Award to a promising young actor or actress from the Italian cinema industry, who will also be a member of the event’s jury.
